"Atomic City" a Theater Performance of Jon Morris and the Danish theater company Terra Nova,
La MaMa E.T.C., New York
Jul. - Sep. 08
Tyvek, tape, rope
After rehearsing on the open lawn and inside the white-cube-like main space of the Watermill Center the group invited me to create a space for their performance at the rustic main theater at La MaMa E.T.C.. I suggested a transformable space made out of Tyvek, a white paper-like vapor barrier. Four 10' high walls enclose a 24' square artificial field of grass in the beginning of the play. Throughout the performance these walls move up and down independently allowing views, passage or to frame the scene. They also serve as projection screens for shadow play, and the atmospheric colored light designed by Felix Grimm.
