New York, September 2013 - May 2014
Michel Schranz was asked to design the first US store and gallery for Other Criteria, the arts-based publishing company co-founded by Damian Hirst. Studio Christian Wassmann was in charge of supervising the construction process and finding the best on-site design solutions to achieve the desired minimal aesthetics without sacrificing the traditional SoHo loft atmosphere. The ground floor of the landmarked cast-iron building serves as a retail space with custom-made display furniture resting on a beautifully restored oak floor. The former basement was transformed into a gallery space with a high-quality concrete floor and lighting. In order to invite daylight to the lower-level and to create a large double-height space we removed a large part of the dividing floor slab and installed an open staircase.
