Souvenirs: New New York Icons at Storefront for Arts and Architecture
From September 16, 2017 to November 22, 2017
Opening: September 16, 2017, 7PM
Storefront for Art and Architecture: Souvenirs: New New York Icons includes our proposal for the Chelsea neighborhood. Our proposed Icon emphasizes its geographic location, exploring in built form the relationship between the sun and the New York City grid.
Storefronts' second model show is designed by MOS Architects and is part of the Ideas City Festival. The exhibition challenges the symbols that constitute our collective notion of the typically commercialized, nostalgic, and ultimately cliché forms that embody souvenirs. Souvenirs: New New York Icons invited artists, architects, and designers to produce an original souvenir based on a particular assigned neighborhood, area, or geographic boundary within the five boroughs of New York City. This "souvenir" will critically represent the shifting and complex iconography of the city and its cultures. Miniature reproductions of the souvenirs will be available to the public on demand during the exhibition and the three most successful objects will be presented to Mayor Bill de Blasio to be adopted as new souvenirs for New York City.
