threeASFOUR exhibition at the Jewish Museum, NYC, March 2013 – February 2014

A mutual interest in geometry and ancient patterns guided this third collaboration with the fashion trio threeASFOUR, presented at the Jewish Museum. Upon entering the dark exhibition space, visitors encountered a large object that seemed to hover above the ground. This illusion was created by constructing half of a Star Tetrahedron structure and placing it on top of a mirrored floor, which was in the shape of a cloud. While visually completing this symmetrical form, the mirrors also provided new perspectives of the dresses from threeASFOUR’s Spring 2014 collection, a clothing line inspired by sacred geometry and tile patterns found in synagogues, churches, and mosques around the world.

Dynamic projections of platonic solids pulsated across the Star Tetrahedron pavilion, which was oriented 29° from the orthogonal museum space in order to face true north.

The inside surfaces were clad with mirror tiles arranged in a “flower of life” pattern to evoke feelings of infinity. The west-pointing ray of the Star intersected with the window of the building, looking out on Central Park and offering spectacular sunsets, especially around the fall equinox. During the course of the five-month exhibition, the interior served as a space for meditation, talks, performances, and photography. In a convex mirror on the gallery ceiling, the Star Tetrahedron appeared as a six-pointed Star of David, in plan the pavilion formed a cross, and the mirror tile arrangements stemmed from mostly Islamic patterns – all echoing the threeASFOUR collection’s sources.
