For our studios library, my goal was to create a strong but thin bookshelf with the least amount of material. We cut two inch solid ash planks along two diagonals, resulting in V shaped shelves that are one inch thick in the middle and a quarter inch at the edges. The two smaller pieces after this X configuration cut are joined at their wider end and become the vertical support structure, echoing an equally thin appearance. The Superleggera Shelf is light, thin and strong. Its size can be custom tailored to any interior. Every fiber of the ash tree is fully utilized to its maximum strength, even the sawdust is used for heating. The surfaces touching the books are planed and sanded smoothly while the cut undersides reveal the raw machine marks of the band saw.
